Interview: Taylor Dayne

The pop icon will appear as Grizabella (“Glamour Cat”) in the Broadway favorite CATS! The run opens at Merry-Go-Round Playhouse as part of the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival on August 21st in Auburn, New York.

1. Congrats on your upcoming role in CATS! How did the part come about? Yes! The theater, company and producers were having conversations and honestly, they reached through my agency. That’s how I found out about it. I took the meeting and instantly fell in love with the idea.

2. I know you got your start in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach performing at various Russian night clubs. Can you reminisce on that experience? I worked three nights a week at Odessa. It’s really in Brighton Beach proper. For three years I sang up on that stage. I was the White Russian and my other girlfriend was the Black Russian. It worked! We’d start at 10 on the dot, have one break at midnight and go until 3 [in the morning]. We’d play with a huge band. It was culture shock. Sometimes I’d sing the Twilight Zone music as I was driving down the Belt Parkway. I met some of the most passionate people. It was a hell of a time and it taught me how to be strong.

3. You’ve always had a huge LGBT following. Can you describe your relationship with your fans? It’s been 25 years this year since “Tell It To My Heart” was released. My gay fans have always been my most loyal, incredible, passionate and fun audience.

4. What were your thoughts when you first heard Tig Notaro’s sketch about her multiple experiences running into you? Were you humored or offended? Oh, it’s absolutely hysterical! It’s so funny because there’s an element of truth to it. Her storytelling is so dry and she is so gifted and funny. I’m more embarrassed if anything! My speaking voice?! – that’s so me after a couple of martinis!

5. A few years back, Rolling Stone readers voted you as the top replacement for Paula Abdul on American Idol. Have you ever considered becoming a reality show judge? Absolutely but it’s so competitive. I understand the medium and as an artist, I’d love the opportunity. My name has been thrown in the mix a couple of times. We’ll see. I think The Voice is exceptional and so is America’s Got Talent.

6. What are your plans after your CATS engagement ends? I’m constantly touring! I’m on the road through October, November cools out a little bit, I have a few private shows in December and in January, I start up again!

Tickets are now available for CATS and all other Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival productions by calling the box office at (315) 255‑1785 or purchasing online. For more information on the 2013 season, visit www.fingerlakesmtf.com.
