Interview: Davey Wavey

The YouTube sensation and fitness guru opens up about New Year’s resolutions, male beauty and Oprah’s Instagram feed.

1. What are your three favorite Halloween costumes for the LGBT community? Well, I’ve always thought that Halloween is really a competition for gay guys to see who can wear as little clothing as possible—and still get away with calling it a costume. Having said that, going as a one night stand is pretty easy. No costume required. If you want to be a move-in ready lesbian, just pop a cardboard moving box around your waist. Or just put on a backwards cap and you can be a straight boy.

2. Can you list some of your personal heroes? Well, Oprah. Obviously. And following her on Instagram has become my new obsession. You see the good, the bad and the ugly. I’m also a big fan of Deepak Chopra and Dr. Wayne Dyer. My parents are pretty high on the list, too.

3. What are your New Year’s resolutions? Last year, due to the numerous studies linking red meat consumption to higher mortality rates, my resolution was to limit beef to twice per week. It turned out to be a very easy resolution to keep. For 2013, I want to up the ante and start “meatless Mondays” to get a diet richer in nourishing veggies.

4. How would you describe your dedicated and growing fan base? I’ve done a number of meet-ups, including one in Los Angeles, and I have to say that my audience is the nicest, sweetest group of people that you could ever meet. They’re insanely positive, inspiring, strong… and gay. Though I do have a growing female audience that I totally adore. A shout out to the ladies!

5. Please share one critical workout tip. One of the best pieces of workout advice that I’ve ever been told—and that I share with my fitness followers—is that persistence is absolutely paramount. Rivers cut through mountains not because of strength, but through persistence. You have to be in it for the long haul.

6. Who’s the most beautiful man alive? Colton Haynes. I would be his toilet paper.

7. Who’s your favorite pop star and why? You know, I much prefer the sound of silence. It’s overrated. Secretly, I’m actually a 80 year old man who turns down the radio and goes to bed early. I just look really good for my age.

8. Which of your myriad YouTube clips has the most importance to you? Well, each video holds a very special place in my heart—and usually my favorite video is the one I’m currently working on. But the most important videos are rarely the ones that get the most views because I’m not talking about sex, foreskin or gay twins. If I had to pick just one, it would be a video called “250 Balloons to Remember the Fallen” wherein we wrote the names of LGBT suicide victims on balloons. It was our own little tribute, but it was incredibly moving and powerful. And it didn’t contain a single penis joke. Go figure.
